BLOCKCHAIN LAB BRIEFING · STABLECOINS

A Post Says a Tether-Backed Firm Is Licensed to Issue USDT on Bitcoin

Putting the largest dollar token on Bitcoin again is a settlement-design claim. The post is a news account, and the licence is not attached.

01

What happened

On 2 October 2026 @coinbureau posted that Tether-backed Utexo had secured a licence to issue USDT on Bitcoin, that this would happen this month, and that users could send USDT privately, swap it with bitcoin, and borrow against bitcoin without wrapping it. The post recalls that USDT launched on Bitcoin in 2014 and later grew mainly on Ethereum and Tron. This snapshot shows 167 reposts, 14 quotes, 69 replies and 859 likes.

A separate post the same day, from @pete_rizzo_, said Tether had announced native USDT on Bitcoin and cited CoinDesk, with a figure of more than 720 million users. That is a second account, not a second document.

02

Why it matters

Where a dollar token lives changes the failure mode. An issuance on Bitcoin is not an IOU on Ethereum, and a private send is not the same product as an account on Tron. Borrowing against bitcoin without wrapping it is a credit product sitting beside the token, not a feature of the token itself.

The supply figure in the post, $184 billion, is the post's number. This desk did not recompute Tether's supply.

03

The operating layer

A builder who might accept that token needs the chain, the issuer legal entity, the licence name, and whether 'private' means a shielded pool, a relay, or marketing. The post gives none of those nouns.

A loan against bitcoin is a margin or credit agreement. It can liquidate the bitcoin. That is not 'USDT is on Bitcoin'.

04

What is verified

The post is from @coinbureau on 2 October 2026. It attributes a licence to Utexo and a backing relationship to Tether.

This pass did not retrieve the licence, Tether's own post, or the CoinDesk article the second post cited.

05

What is still unclear

Which licence, issued by whom, covering which activity.

Whether the October date is a launch or a target.

What 'privately' means in the design, and who can still see the mint.

06

The catch

'Officially coming back' is the post's adverb. A licence, even if real, is not a live token and not a promise that bitcoin holders can borrow without a liquidation rule.

WATCH

What builders should watch

  1. 01Tether or Utexo's own notice, with the licence named.
  2. 02The chain mechanism: issuance, transfer, and freeze keys.
  3. 03Whether borrowing is a separate venue with its own margin rule.
  4. 04How this issuance relates to USDT already circulating on other chains.

BOTTOM LINE

Two posts say USDT is returning to Bitcoin via a licensed firm. Until the issuer publishes the licence and the design, this is a lead, not a settlement rail you can book.
