BLOCKCHAIN LAB BRIEFING · AI AGENTS

An Agent Needs a Budget and a Stop Before It Gets a Wallet.

Software that can call a payment API will spend whatever the key allows. The control is a limit, a merchant list, a time window and a person who can halt it. A prompt is not that control.

01

What happened

Agent payment demos, including work on this site, keep failing in the same place: the model is given a signer, and the evaluation is whether it can complete a purchase. The missing objects are the budget, the allowlist, the receipt, and the revoke path.

A public experiment that lets an agent pay for an API call is still those objects, even when the protocol is only a header and a stablecoin transfer.

02

Why it matters

The loss mode is not a clever model. It is an ordinary key with no limit, called in a loop, against a merchant the operator did not approve. The chain will settle every one of those calls.

Putting the key in a hardware module does not set the budget. It protects the key from a simple copy.

03

The operating layer

Before mainnet value, write the policy: maximum per call, maximum per day, allowed destinations, what the agent must log, and who can set the balance to zero. Enforce it in the signer or the contract, not in the prompt. Test the halt.

Keep the agent on a rail you can refund or freeze. Do not start with a bearer asset and a hope.

04

What is verified

The Forge blueprint for agent payment controls states the same split. This briefing does not certify a framework or a vendor.

05

What remains unclear

Whether a given integration enforces limits in the signer or only asks the model to behave. The log a person can read after the fact.

06

The catch

Autonomy is a product adjective. Authority is a key. Give the agent as little authority as the task needs, and a person the ability to take it back.

Not a recommendation to let a model hold funds.

WATCH

What builders should watch

  1. 01The per-payment and per-day limits.
  2. 02The destination allowlist.
  3. 03The person who can halt the signer.

BOTTOM LINE

Set the budget in the signer. Then, and only then, consider letting the agent call it.
