BLOCKCHAIN LAB BRIEFING · STABLECOINS
Eighty-Two Million Devices Are Not Eighty-Two Million Accounts.
Samsung will put USDC inside Samsung Wallet for eligible US Galaxy users in the last week of October 2026. The 82 million figure is compatible devices. Solana is one network partner. Sui is another. The phone is not the custodian.
- Stated82 million compatible US Galaxy devices at launch.USDC to a wallet, or local currency to a bank in 60-plus countries.
- Not statedEnrolled accounts, or a volume of transfers. An exclusive role for any one network.
The device figure is Samsung’s, footnoted as compatible Galaxy devices. It does not become users, transfer volume, or one network’s market.

What happened
Samsung Electronics America said on 7 October 2026, from Plano, Texas, that stablecoin functionality will launch inside Samsung Wallet in the last week of October for eligible Galaxy users in the United States. USDC is the first stablecoin the wallet will support. The release gives a week, not a day. It describes a scheduled launch, not a service that was already generally available when the note was issued.
At launch, Samsung says, the feature will be available across 82 million US Galaxy devices. The footnote defines that figure as the number of Galaxy devices in the United States compatible with Samsung Wallet. It is a distribution ceiling. It is not a count of people who will enrol, and it is not a volume of transfers.
- 82 millionCompatible US Galaxy devices
- 60+Countries named for the bank route
- 18Minimum age, eligible US residents
- Android 13Minimum on a compatible device
A device count, a country count, an age rule and an operating-system floor answer different questions. None of them is volume.

Why it matters
The product is a consumer wallet with custody taken out of the user’s hands. Samsung says eligible users can start without installing another application or managing private keys themselves. The same release says Samsung is not a bank, not a money transmitter and not a digital-asset custodian, and does not hold customer funds. Accounts, custody and money movement are provided by regulated partners, on those partners’ terms.
Two routes are described, and they are not one promise. A user may send USDC to a compatible external wallet. Samsung does not charge a fee on that transfer. Speed depends on the network, and the recipient’s wallet or exchange may charge its own fee. Separately, a user may send to an eligible bank account in more than 60 countries, with the recipient paid in local currency. On that path fees apply, vary by country and amount, and are shown before the sender confirms. “No transfer fee” does not cover the bank route, and it does not cover buying the stablecoin.
03
The operating layer
The stack is four parties, even when the screen shows one. Samsung provides the interface and the devices. Bastion, described as a licensed stablecoin custodian overseen by US financial regulators, powers the cross-border framework, and the accounts run on Bastion. Coinbase is Bastion’s sub-custodian. The release says USDC in the wallet is safeguarded via Coinbase Prime Vault. Solana and Sui are named together for infrastructure and network support. Neither is described as exclusive, so the device count cannot be assigned to one of them.
Eligibility is a second filter on the 82 million. The service is for eligible US residents aged 18 or older, with a Samsung Account, on a compatible Galaxy device running Android 13 or higher. Registration, identity verification and biometric authentication are required. Sanctioned jurisdictions are excluded. The list of bank-transfer countries is to be shown in the application, not fixed in the release.
- 01WhoAn eligible US resident, 18 or older, on Android 13 or higher.
- 02ProofA Samsung Account, identity verification, biometrics on a registered device.
- 03Which routeUSDC to a compatible wallet, or local currency into an eligible bank.
- 04Who holds itNot Samsung. Accounts run on Bastion. USDC sits in Coinbase Prime Vault.
A compatible device is the first filter. Identity and a registered biometric are further filters. This is not a funnel with measured conversion.

What is verified
The 7 October release states the last-week-of-October timing, USDC as the first stablecoin, the 82 million compatible-device definition, the two transfer routes, the fee distinction, the bank path to more than 60 countries, the roles of Bastion, Coinbase, Solana and Sui, the private-key point, and the statement that Samsung does not hold the funds.
It also says later capabilities may include paying online or by tapping a device in a shop, and expansion into other markets as each country’s rules allow. “May” is the word in the release. Those capabilities are not part of the October launch as described.
05
What remains unclear
The day inside the last week of October. The fee table for the bank path, which the release leaves to the application. Which external wallets count as compatible, beyond support for USDC on a network Samsung Wallet supports. How many of the 82 million devices belong to people who will clear identity verification.
Nothing in the release is a forecast of active accounts or of transfer volume. Both would be later measurements, and this desk does not invent them.
06
The catch
Putting a dollar stablecoin inside a wallet people already open is a distribution event. Treating the compatible-device number as a user base, or as demand for one network, is a different event, and it has not been evidenced. Solana and Sui are both on the page. The full device count is not either of them.
The later proof is enrolled accounts, repeat transfers and the all-in cost of the bank path. The figure in the headline is a handset count.
WATCH
What builders should watch
- 01Whether the October window opens on a named day, and for whom identity verification clears.
- 02Whether bank-path fees, once shown in the application, change the comparison with existing remittance.
- 03Whether any later in-shop payment is a launched feature, or still a sentence that says may.
BOTTOM LINE
Eighty-two million is the number of compatible devices. The custodian is not the phone, and the network is not a single one.
