BLOCKCHAIN LAB BRIEFING · SECURITY

A Price Oracle Is a Committee with a Timestamp. It Is Not the Market.

Data feeds publish a value and a time, aggregated from sources by a set of operators. A contract that treats the value as truth is trusting the committee, the sources and the freshness rule.

01

What happened

Chainlink’s data-feed docs describe oracle networks that read off-chain markets and post a signed aggregate, with a heartbeat and a deviation threshold. The feed can be wrong, late, or pointed at a venue you do not use.

An optimistic oracle adds a dispute window. The window only helps if someone is present and paid to dispute.

02

Why it matters

The minimum control is the one this studio uses in pool designs: reject the action when the value is missing, stale, or through a threshold. A production system also names the market, the admin who can change the feed address, and the fallback if the feed reverts.

A number on a dashboard is not an oracle unless the contract reads it.

03

The operating layer

Bind each automated action to a named feed, a maximum age, and a fallback: pause, switch, or ask a person. Test the stale path. Emit an event if an administrator points the contract at a new feed.

Do not call the feed tamper-proof.

04

What is verified

Chainlink publishes the data-feed model, including heartbeats. This page does not certify a feed’s current sources or any historical price.

05

What remains unclear

Which markets a feed samples. Who can replace the address in your contract. What you did the last time the feed stalled.

06

The catch

An oracle moves trust. It does not delete it. Protocols that lost funds to a thin or stale feed did not lack an oracle. They treated a committee as a fact.

No attack procedure is included, and no feed is endorsed.

WATCH

What builders should watch

  1. 01The feed address, the heartbeat, and the contract’s maximum age.
  2. 02The markets behind the feed.
  3. 03The pause path when the feed is stale.

BOTTOM LINE

Store the value and the time. Refuse to act when the time is old.
