BLOCKCHAIN LAB BRIEFING · SECURITY

A Pause Key Is a Control. It Is Also a Single Point of Failure.

Contracts that can pause transfers or minting give an operator a way to stop a loss. They also give that operator, or anyone who takes the key, a way to stop the product. The key has to be named, split and rehearsed.

01

What happened

Pause functions are ordinary in tokens, pools and bridges. The honest reason is incident response: a bug, a compromise, a legal order. The dishonest presentation is a system that claims to be unstoppable and can be stopped by one address.

Users discover the key when they need the exit, which is the wrong time to learn it exists.

02

Why it matters

Treasury and payout products should assume a pause can happen at the token, at the bridge, and in your own contract. Each pause has a different owner. Your status page that says network degraded is the wrong sentence if your own key was turned.

03

The operating layer

Name the role, the people, the delay if there is a timelock, and the unpause path. Rehearse it. Emit a public event. Tell users which balances are frozen and which rail still works.

If a pause can trap funds with no recovery function, say that before anyone deposits.

04

What is verified

Pause and timelock patterns are standard in public contract code and in the OpenZeppelin libraries many of those contracts use. This page does not review a deployment.

05

What remains unclear

Who can pause each contract you depend on. Whether unpausing needs the same key. What users are told during the halt.

06

The catch

A pause you cannot explain is not a safety feature. It is undisclosed administrator power. A pause you can explain is a control, and controls need owners and tests.

Not an audit.

WATCH

What builders should watch

  1. 01The pause role on every contract you ship or hold.
  2. 02The timelock, if there is one.
  3. 03The user message and the fallback rail.

BOTTOM LINE

Name the key. A pause that surprises your own users is an incident even when the motive was safety.
