BLOCKCHAIN LAB BRIEFING · REGULATION

ISO 20022 Is a Message Standard. It Does Not Make a Token a Payment System.

ISO 20022 defines how institutions structure financial messages. A token that advertises the standard is still a token. The schema does not settle it or make a bank accept it.

01

What happened

ISO 20022 is the standard for electronic messages between financial institutions: payments, cash reporting, and related flows. Infrastructures have been migrating onto it for years.

A mapper that puts a token transfer into a structured message is doing integration. The message is not the settlement.

02

Why it matters

Compliant is used as a trust adjective in token marketing. Where it is true, it means a payload can be expressed in the schema. A bank does not accept a stranger’s payload because the schema matches.

A payout product still has to name the settlement asset, the institution and the cash-leg finality.

03

The operating layer

If you emit the messages, name the message set, the institution that consumes them, and the system that settles. If you do not, leave the standard’s name off the token.

04

What is verified

iso20022.org publishes the standard and the message catalogue. This desk is not certifying a network.

05

What remains unclear

Which messages a named bank has agreed to accept. Whether settlement is the message, a token transfer, or a later posting.

06

The catch

The brand sounds institutional. Institutional acceptance is a bilateral agreement. The standard is a dictionary for parties who already have one.

Not a certification and not a reason to buy a token.

WATCH

What builders should watch

  1. 01The message types you send.
  2. 02The institution that has agreed to receive them.
  3. 03The system that settles afterwards.

BOTTOM LINE

Use the standard for messages institutions expect. Do not paint it on a token.
