BLOCKCHAIN LAB BRIEFING · ETHEREUM

The Block Says the Ethereum Foundation Put zkAPI on Mainnet

A payment that a provider can check without learning who paid is an agent and API problem, not a trading problem. Three newsrooms posted it. The contract address is not in those posts.

01

What happened

On 1 October 2026 @TheBlockCo posted that the Ethereum Foundation had launched zkAPI on mainnet, based on a design co-authored by Vitalik Buterin, letting users pay for AI and other APIs from prepaid ETH or USDC with zero-knowledge proofs so a provider cannot link a request to the payer. The snapshot shows 158 reposts and 1,031 likes.

The same story was posted by @Cointelegraph on 2 October and by @coinbureau, which added that the work was with the Open Anonymity Project and that users prepay and then use proofs to reach metered APIs. Three accounts, one claim. None of the posts includes a contract address.

02

Why it matters

Metered APIs, including model inference, usually bind the caller, the bill and the log. A proof that a prepaid balance covers the call, without naming the payer, splits those. That is useful for an agent that should not carry a long-lived identity, and it is a new place for the payment to fail.

Privacy of the payer is not privacy of the query. A prompt can still identify a person. The payment rail does not scrub the body.

03

The operating layer

An operator wiring this in needs the verifying contract, the asset that can be prepaid, the revocation story, and what the provider logs anyway. The posts do not supply them.

Do not describe a mainnet claim as a formal verification of the circuit. Nobody in these posts said the circuit was proved in public.

04

What is verified

Three newsroom accounts posted the launch between 1 and 2 October 2026. They agree on mainnet, prepayment in ETH or USDC, and unlinkability of the payment.

This desk has not executed a call against the deployment and has not read the repository in this pass.

05

What is still unclear

The addresses, the circuit, and who operates the prover.

What metadata still leaks at the provider and at the network layer.

Whether a refund of unused prepayment exists.

06

The catch

Unlinkable payment is a narrow claim. It does not make the API private, and a newsroom post is not the deployment.

WATCH

What builders should watch

  1. 01The Ethereum Foundation post or repository.
  2. 02Which assets can prepay, and who can freeze them.
  3. 03What the provider still logs.
  4. 04A separate note the next day from Vitalik about using the tool himself, which is a usage report, not this launch.

BOTTOM LINE

Three outlets say zkAPI is on mainnet so a provider can check payment without learning the payer. The addresses are not in the posts, and the query itself can still identify you.
