BLOCKCHAIN LAB BRIEFING · VENTURE BUILDS

Points Are a Marketing Balance. They Are Not a Right to a Token or to Revenue.

Points programmes record activity and hint at a later distribution. Unless a contract says otherwise, the operator can change the formula, the expiry and the existence of any later asset. Builders should not model points as equity.

01

What happened

A points balance is usually a row in the operator’s database, sometimes mirrored on a chain for display. The terms, where they exist, reserve the right to change the programme. Users still trade expectations as if the row were a claim.

A later airdrop, if it happens, is a new decision. It is not performance of the points balance unless the terms created that duty.

02

Why it matters

Teams that raise, hire, or sign suppliers against a points narrative are building on an unwritten option. The option may never vest. The activity it encouraged may have been the product.

This studio does not do token-sale work. A points campaign that is a token sale in sequence is the thing that sentence refuses.

03

The operating layer

If you run a programme, publish whether points expire, whether they are transferable, and whether they are a right to anything. If they are not a right, say that in the balance view, not only in a footer.

If you are integrating someone else’s points, do not show them as an asset in a treasury.

04

What is verified

The pattern is visible across public programme terms. This page does not interpret a named programme.

05

What remains unclear

Whether any contract, as opposed to a blog post, obliges a future distribution. What happens to the balance if the operator stops.

06

The catch

Hinting at a valuable distribution while disclaiming it is how the programme attracts activity it does not have to pay for. The disclaimer is the fact. The hint is the advertisement.

Not a view on participating in any programme.

WATCH

What builders should watch

  1. 01The sentence in the terms that says what a point is.
  2. 02Whether the balance is only a database row.
  3. 03The treasury treatment: not an asset, unless a contract says it is.

BOTTOM LINE

Call points a campaign score. Do not call them a claim, a share, or a future token.
