BLOCKCHAIN LAB BRIEFING · CONNECTED ASSETS

A Carbon Token Can Sell the Same Tonne Twice. Retirement Is the Event That Matters.

Carbon credits are entries on registries. A token that points at a credit does not retire it. If the credit stays live on the registry, or is tokenised again, two buyers can think they own one tonne.

All briefings

01

What happened

Voluntary and compliance carbon markets already struggle with double issuance, double use and double claiming. The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market publishes principles aimed at that problem. A token layer does not satisfy the principles. Retirement on the underlying registry is what takes the tonne out of circulation.

A marketplace transfer of the token, without a registry retirement, is a change of who holds the pointer.

02

Why it matters

Connected-asset products on this site are about provenance a counterparty can challenge. Carbon is the case where the challenge is simple: show the registry id, the vintage, the methodology, and the retirement serial. If you cannot, you do not have a tonne.

03

The operating layer

Store the registry, the project id, the serial, and the retirement status. Update them from the registry, not from the token’s metadata. If the token and the registry disagree, show the registry and halt the sale.

Do not describe a transfer as an offset.

04

What is verified

The Integrity Council publishes the principles. Registry rules differ by programme. This page does not verify a project.

05

What remains unclear

Whether a given token’s supply is limited to unretired serials. Who can mint a second token against the same serial.

06

The catch

The buyer wanted a retired tonne or a tradable credit. Those are different products. A token that is vague about which one it is will be used as both, which is how the tonne is sold twice.

Not a view on any credit or any price.

WATCH

What builders should watch

  1. 01Registry, project and serial.
  2. 02Whether the tonne is retired.
  3. 03What happens when the token and the registry disagree.

BOTTOM LINE

Retire on the registry that issued the credit. The token is a pointer until that happens, and a receipt afterwards.
