SPLIT IN PROGRESS · ETHEREUM

Consensys

Consensys is the company Joe Lubin built around Ethereum. In September 2026 it started cutting itself in two.

You are deciding whether to build perpetuals inside MetaMask while the company that employs you is scheduled to finish a split by the end of 2026.

Public reporting and the employer’s own releases. Not a relationship with Blockchain Lab. Not a credit opinion.

Founded
2014, by Joseph Lubin.
Base
The perpetuals posting says EMEA - Remote. That is a region, not a country, and not a promise of worldwide eligibility.
Status
Private. Last priced round was the March 2022 Series D at about $7 billion. A split into MetaMask and a new Consensys was announced on 9 September 2026, to complete by year end.
People
Joe Lubin, Ethereum co-founder, has been chief executive since the start. After the split he is slated to be chairman and CEO of MetaMask, and executive chairman of the new infrastructure company. Mike Kriak is named CEO of that new Consensys, David Cunningham president.

Lubin built Consensys as a studio and then as the owner of the products that made Ethereum usable: the wallet people actually open, the RPC they actually call, the clients banks can actually run. The March 2022 round priced that bundle at about $7 billion. Layoffs followed in the down years. The SEC fight over MetaMask staking and swaps was dropped in February 2025, after a separate pre-emptive suit had already failed on procedure in 2024. The legal weather is clearer than it was. It is not a business model.

On 9 September 2026 the company said it would split by the end of the year. The existing entity becomes MetaMask, Lubin as chairman and CEO, aimed at self-custody consumer finance: payments, savings, investing, and the wallet. A new company keeps the Consensys name, takes Linea, Besu, and Teku, and is led by Mike Kriak and David Cunningham, with Lubin as executive chairman. The staff perpetuals role, as the employer wrote it, is MetaMask Perpetuals: price, position, order, and liquidation across extension and mobile. You would be building a derivatives experience inside a consumer wallet, during the months the employment entity is being redrawn. Ask which company will be on the contract, and whether perpetuals is a flagship or an experiment that can be cut when the split forces a budget.

There is a fresh operational scar next door. On 2 October 2026 Linea said it was exiting validators tied to a yield product after a MetaMask infrastructure incident. Reported figures for diverted tips were small and not confirmed by the companies. The incident is not this job. It is evidence that the consumer stack and the protocol stack still share a blast radius in the month before they are supposed to be separate companies. A perpetuals system that depends on a price feed inherits exactly that class of failure: a feed, a decimal, a liquidation, a wallet popup. That is the work. The corporate chart is the context.

Founders

Joseph Lubin

Founder

Co-founder of Ethereum, then the founder of Consensys in 2014. He has been the constant. The September 2026 plan keeps him as chief executive of the consumer company and chair of the infrastructure company. A staff engineer on perpetuals will still be in his orbit. The day-to-day CEO of Linea will not be the CEO of this product.

What the company sells

MetaMask

The consumer wallet. The company claims more than 100 million downloads across about 190 countries and trillions in cumulative volume. Company figures. Perpetuals is a MetaMask product, which means this seat goes with the consumer company, not with Linea.

Linea, Besu, Teku

The infrastructure and protocol stack. These move, under the announcement, to the new company that keeps the Consensys name. Citi, DTC, and BNY Mellon have been cited as Besu users. That is not your team if you take perpetuals.

What was incubated

Infura and a long list of spun efforts. The venture-studio era is the history. The employer you would join is a consumer finance product with a derivatives idea attached.

What should change your mind

  • Entity risk through the end of 2026. Title, team, and product can be redrawn by a separation agreement you will not see.
  • A $7 billion mark from 2022 is not a current valuation. No newer priced round was found.
  • Consumer derivatives. Perpetuals inside a wallet used by non-professionals is a product risk and a regulatory risk. EMEA does not make that smaller.
  • Feed and liquidation correctness. This is where the seat can lose people money. Treat the posting's mention of decimal precision as the job, not as flavour.

Ask them

  • Will the offer be from the MetaMask entity or from the new Consensys?
  • Is perpetuals shipping, and in which jurisdictions is it actually offered?
  • Who owns the price feed, and what is the failure mode when it stalls?
  • What happened to headcount and scope in the 2022 and 2024 cuts, and is this seat a backfill?
  • EMEA remote: which countries, which entity, which hours?
