Protocol Engineer
The Vancouver protocol seat: contracts, proofs, and chain drift. The board was last updated on 20 October 2025. The cash band does not name a currency, and the equity is private.
You are deciding whether to take a Vancouver seat at a private company whose last priced round, in April 2023, marked it at $3 billion — and whose cash band on the posting does not even name a currency.
Blockchain Lab analysis, for a candidate deciding whether to apply. We are not the employer. Compensation on this posting: Employer-stated base: $120,000/year up to $250,000/year. The posting does not name the currency..

Apply if
- You have built a bridge, a light client, or a state-sync system, not only an application contract.
- You can be in Vancouver. The posting does not offer remote.
- You can read a $120,000–$250,000 band that refuses to say CAD or USD, and still ask.
Do not apply if
- You need the offer to be worldwide remote.
- You will treat ZRO as the salary.
- You want a team whose posting has been edited in the last month. This one has not.
You would own
Protocol contracts and their lifecycle: architecture, tests, deploy, and the compatibility work as supported chains move.
You would not own
It does not own the token, the next round, or a remote exception the posting never grants.
What they wrote, and what we read
Employer stated
Design and implement core protocol contracts on EVM and non-EVM chains, including message validators and proof verification.
Reading
This is the interoperability system, not a dApp on top of it. If your last job was a token, say so and expect to be screened out.
Employer stated
Formal verification, invariant testing, simulation, fuzzing, and audit readiness.
Reading
They wrote a security bar, not a research hobby. A candidate who cannot show a failing invariant will not match the sentence.
Employer stated
Base salary from $120,000/year up to $250,000/year. Currency not named. Equity may be provided.
Reading
Do not translate this into CAD or USD yourself. The posting also says equity is position-dependent. Ask which instrument, and whether any of it is ZRO.
The last priced mark this brief will stand behind is the 4 April 2023 Series B: $120 million at $3 billion, with no single lead, as the company told the press. That number is more than three years old. The March 2022 Series A, $135 million at $1 billion, included FTX Ventures. A token can trade every day and still tell you nothing about what your option is worth. ZRO is not stock in LayerZero Labs.
Two seats share the city and the silence on currency. This one tops out higher ($250,000 versus $200,000 on the backend req) and was last touched in October 2025, ten months before the backend record moved. Ask whether both reqs are live, and which manager still owns this text.
Ninety days — illustrative
Not the employer’s onboarding plan.
- Days 1–30: read the contracts that are already deployed. List admin keys and upgrade paths before you design a new one.
- Days 31–60: one invariant or fuzz target on a component you were actually given, with a written failure.
- Days 61–90: a compatibility note for one chain that changed under you. That is the maintenance the posting describes.
A week you can rehearse
- Trace one message from source chain to destination and name who can forge the proof.
- Write the test you would add before an upgrade.
- Say, out loud, that you will not guess the currency.
Ask them
- Is the band Canadian dollars, US dollars, or something else?
- Is this seat Vancouver-only, and is the October 2025 text still the job?
- What is the equity instrument, and is any of it the token?
Walk away if
- They convert the band into a currency that is not on the posting.
- They offer remote after the location line says Vancouver.
- Compensation is quoted in unlocked ZRO.
Proof you can build before you apply
- The state-machine lab: an honest path and one adversarial case. Illustrative. It is not their protocol.

The product claim is specific. Chains do not share state. LayerZero's bet is that a message, with a proof, is enough for an application to stop choosing one chain. The protocol engineer is hired against that claim: contracts on EVM and non-EVM, validators, proof verification, formal methods. The backend engineer is hired against the operational claim that the system already moves tens of billions of dollars of daily transactional volume. That volume line is the employer's, on the backend posting. It is not an audit.
The corporate claim is a 2023 price. One hundred and twenty million dollars at a three-billion-dollar mark, after a one-billion-dollar Series A that included FTX Ventures. No later priced round is in this brief, because this pass did not confirm one. Later database entries get repeated on blogs. They are not here on purpose. Equity, if you are offered any, is private. The cash bands — $120,000 to $250,000 and $120,000 to $200,000 a year — do not say dollars of which country. Vancouver is in Canada. Ask.
Founders
Bryan Pellegrino
Co-founder and CEO
He is the executive on the Series B. He told The Block there was no lead investor among the 33 participants, and that the raise had been in motion through a difficult market. A candidate should know which founder actually runs the hiring loop. This brief does not pretend to.
Ryan Zarick
Co-founder and CTO
Quoted in the funding coverage on the omnichain product idea: one application using the speed of one chain and the security of another. The protocol seat reports into that technical bet. The backend seat may not.
What the company sells
LayerZero
A messaging protocol. The employer's own line is that builders should stop being constrained by one chain. The protocol engineer's posting names contracts, proof verification, and data availability.
What the raise said
The April 2023 release said the network had relayed over two million messages across 30+ chains in its first year. That is a 2023 operating claim, not a 2026 volume figure.
ZRO
A token. It is not the stock you are being offered. Ask what, if anything, a hire receives besides the cash band.

March 2022
Series A
$135 million at about $1 billion
Crunchbase's report of the later round describes this raise as co-led by a16z, Sequoia, and FTX Ventures. FTX Ventures is a name on the cap table. Ask what, if anything, it still means for governance or reputation.
4 Apr 2023
Series B
$120 million at $3 billion
The company's release and The Block agree: $120 million, $3 billion, 33 investors, no single lead. Named participants include a16z crypto, Sequoia, and Circle Ventures. The posting still lists a16z, Sequoia, PayPal, Binance Ventures, Coinbase Ventures, Uniswap Labs, Circle, and Delphi. That list is the employer's.
What should change your mind
- A three-year-old valuation. Private marks do not update themselves when the market does.
- FTX Ventures on the 2022 round. Not a finding of wrongdoing. A question you should be willing to ask.
- Currency silence on a Canadian location. A band without a currency is not an offer.
- The protocol req was last updated on the board on 20 October 2025. Almost a year later it was still listed. Confirm it is a team.
Ask them
- Is the base CAD or USD, and is Vancouver on-site?
- What equity or token, if any, sits beside the cash band, and at which mark?
- Is the protocol seat still staffed against the October 2025 text?
- What is live in production that a new hire would touch in week one?

What the employer actually wrote
Employer stated. Protocol engineer on LayerZero’s messaging contracts: EVM and non-EVM, proof verification, and the lifecycle from architecture through audit readiness. The seat is in Vancouver.
- Design and implement core protocol contracts and logic on both EVM and non-EVM chains (e.g., message validators, data availability mechanisms, proof verification).
- Collaborate with various teams to develop new system primitives, validate security assumptions, and improve protocol robustness.
- Own components across their lifecycle: architecture, implementation, testing, deployment, and iteration.
- Contribute to high-assurance engineering practices: formal verification, invariant testing, simulation frameworks, fuzzing, and audit readiness.
- Investigate emerging cryptographic techniques and novel designs to enhance trust minimization and scalability.

A reading of the work
Blockchain Lab analysis. These lines are a reading of the advertisement. They are not extra hiring requirements.
- Read a message path as two chains that can disagree about finality, not as one function call.
- Name who can upgrade the contract after you ship it.
- Show an invariant test, not a happy-path script.
Still not disclosed
- Anything the compensation line does not already quote. A printed band is the employer’s sentence for the place they named — not a Blockchain Lab estimate, and not a promise for every location on the posting.
- Closing date, and the day the role was first published. The board timestamp is an update.
- Which countries may apply. “Remote” alone is not worldwide eligibility. If the employer wrote a country or a region, that sentence is theirs — still ask which entity can hire you.
- Visa sponsorship, the real on-call rota, and the employing subsidiary, unless the posting already named them.
