You are deciding whether to spec a payments API, hire the first two engineers, and face banks, in Palo Alto, on a Bay Area band of $160k–$260k that does not name a currency.

People
Mo Shaikh and Avery Ching signed the company's July 2022 funding note. This brief does not assert who is operating CEO on 6 October 2026.

Aptos was founded by people who had already built a chain inside Meta and were not allowed to ship it. The 2022 capital stack is large and, in places, awkward: a16z, and also FTX Ventures and Three Arrows, in the season those names were still cheques rather than cautionary tales. The company's July note treats $350 million as the total. No valuation was attached in the sources this brief uses. Anyone who gives you a round number from memory is not this page.

The seat is a strategy change you can read without a rumour. The posting says commercial efforts are being consolidated into one financial-services company — payments, tokenization, and trading — and that payments is the first chartered business, ring-fenced, with a P&L and a signed settlement partnership. You would write the API businesses integrate, stand in front of banks and EMIs, hire two engineers, and stop hiring until revenue triggers fire. That is a general-manager job wearing an engineering title. Eight years of payment infrastructure is the bar they wrote. Move expertise is not the sentence. If you want to work on Block-STM, this is the wrong req, and the band will not make it the right one.

Founders

Mo Shaikh

Co-founder

Came out of Diem and Novi at Meta with Ching. Multicoin stressed that Meta itself was not an investor. He co-signed the July 2022 post announcing the FTX Ventures and Jump round. Confirm, in the interview, whether he is still the executive above this P&L.

Avery Ching

Co-founder

The other public builder on that note, also ex-Diem. The payments seat is a commercial role on top of the chain they built. It is a different job from core protocol, and it will be judged on a P&L the posting invented as a structure. Ask whether the fence is real.

What the company sells

The chain

A Move layer 1. The posting calls it sub-second and sub-cent and aimed at financial services. Those performance lines are the employer's.

Payments, the unit

A ring-fenced business with its own P&L. An exclusive global settlement partnership is described as already signed. First product is the Payment API.

What you would ship

The API, a testnet sandbox, revenue attribution, KYC/KYB, and the seam to an internal trading stack for FX. Then two hires, and no more until revenue says so.

Do not price APT as your grant.

  1. 15 Mar 2022

    Strategic round

    $200 million

Multicoin: led by a16z crypto. Participants named there include Katie Haun's fund, Three Arrows Capital, ParaFi, FTX Ventures, Tiger Global, Coinbase Ventures, and others. Three Arrows and FTX Ventures are names, not a scandal by themselves. They are on the history.

  2. 25 Jul 2022

    Further round

    $150 million

The company's own post: led by FTX Ventures and Jump Crypto, with Apollo, Griffin, Franklin Templeton, Circle Ventures, and continued support from a16z and Multicoin. The same post says total funding had reached $350 million.

What should change your mind

  • FTX Ventures and Three Arrows are on the 2022 history. Ask what rights survived.
  • A 'ring-fenced P&L' inside a protocol company can be accounting theatre. Ask who can spend.
  • The partnership is described as signed and exclusive. Ask for the counterparty and the obligation.
  • Bay Area band, currency unnamed, location Palo Alto. Not a remote-worldwide offer.

Ask them

  • Who is the employer, and is the payments unit a subsidiary?
  • What did the settlement partnership actually sign, and in which corridors is it live?
  • Is the $160k–$260k figure USD, and does it move outside the Bay Area?
  • Who is CEO of Aptos Labs today, and who owns this P&L?

What the employer actually wrote

Employer stated. Engineering lead for Aptos’s payments unit: the Payment API, partner integrations, revenue attribution, and the first two hires. The posting calls payments a ring-fenced unit with its own P&L.

  • The Aptos Payment API. Spec, ship, and run the single API businesses integrate against — wrapping partner infrastructure today, with an orchestration engine routing across a licensed partner network as the business earns it. You write the spec bottoms-up from partner and client requirements.
  • Partner-facing engineering. You are the technical face of the unit: requirements intake, integration leadership, and technical diligence with banks, EMIs, PSPs, stablecoin issuers, and e-wallet platforms. You can run those calls alone and write the requirements doc after.
  • The trust infrastructure. Revenue attribution and reconciliation (the system that proves which volume is ours), a single-window KYC/KYB integration, a testnet sandbox that lets any prospect try the stack before compliance onboarding, and a native-asset-only settlement policy — no bridges.
  • Integration with the trading stack. Our trading team builds the RFQ liquidity and tokenized-FX systems; you own the payments side of that seam — routing corridor FX through their venue, defining the API contract between the two systems, and making the handoff invisible to clients.
  • The team and the calls. Hire and lead the first two engineers; grow the team only as revenue triggers fire. Make the build-vs-buy decisions (orchestration components, KYC tooling) with written memos at each gate.

A reading of the work

Blockchain Lab analysis. These lines are a reading of the advertisement. They are not extra hiring requirements.

  • You are being hired to spec an API and to hire, not only to write Move.
  • Ask what the signed settlement partnership actually obliges, and in which countries.
  • A P&L inside a protocol company can be real, or it can be a slide. Get the budget.

  • Compensation, unless a figure appears in the header. None of these eighteen postings stated one.
